Spousal Support is money paid by one dependent spouse to the other, married or unmarried, after they separate. Spousal support is based on the need of one spouse and the ability to pay, of the other. The Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines (SSAG) provide courts with a starting point for the discussion of how much support, if any, is payable. Unlike the Child Support Guidelines, they are not mandatory.
