When a lawyer provides “Unbundled Services,” that is where the involvement of the lawyer is limited to giving advice, drafting and filing court documents so that the client then represents themselves in court. The main purpose of having such an arrangement is to limit the financial cost of legal assistance.
“Unbundled Services,” is a limited-scope retainer of legal services. Usually it involves preparing the documents necessary, advising you on what to do and how to go about it, but you represent yourself in court. Another kind would be where you just need some help for a particular court appearance, but would deal with the rest yourself. This is definitely not for everyone. The appropriateness and availability of unbundled services needs to be assessed, as the quality of representation remains the same as in a full retainer situation. These arrangements are designed primarily to limit the financial cost of legal assistance.
